Rae Gun On TV

(gotta love where Youtube freezes shots)
So yesterday early afternoon I checked my email to find an email from Arikka Von a local news anchor asking if she could interview me for a Cyber Monday story. After calling her she was on her way in umm an hour. My house was a mess I hadn't showered yet and I had shoveled the whole driveway earlier, ummm yeah. I think it went well and they did a really nice job of focusing on my store name and all that good stuff. I didn't expect any sales or business from it based my other tv experience (and I was right) but I just loved that she wanted to feature small businesses and Etsy in the shopping fuss too.  In case you missed it or aren't in the state here it is (umm from me filming the tv).

What's For Dinner: Week 62

(my Thanksgiving plate it was delicious)
For those of you are new  to my blog I write these weekly plans to help me spend less (I kinda of love grocery shopping, yea I know I'm weird), to save time and to try and help us eat in more often. Also I love knowing what other people eat so I thought it would be fun to share. For a while I'll be adding my plans for what greens. I'll be eating since one of my resolutions is to build a habit of introducing more green veggies into our diet. Maybe some day it'll be so normal for us that I won't have to mention them any more.

I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving weekend. I really enjoyed just taking time to hang out with family and friends and of course shop my tush off these past few days. It's pretty stinking cold right now so I'm all about the comfort food.

Also this week we get to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of our friend's little girl receiving a heart. Seriously it is the most amazing thing on earth to experience the gift of life in that way, the fear of knowing a baby that actually NEEDED a new heart, the knowledge that the conditions for getting a new heart that would work were so unlikely and then the joy every time you remember that she actually did get a one and that she is doing so so well.

P.S. the sale is still going on through Monday. See the post below for info and discount codes.

Day Main Meal Goals (Veggies, Whole Grain, Fish)
Sunday Turkey Sandwiches and Potato Soup Grains and nuts: Sandwich, granola bars, ww pasta
Veggies: broccoli, peas
Fish: ummm maybe I'll skip this week
Monday Enchilada Casserole
Tuesday
Butternut squash, Ricotta and Bacon Linguine
Wednesday Eating Out
Thursday  Roast with Potatoes and peas
Friday Oven Fried Chicken, Rice and Broccoli
Saturday Maddie's Heart Celebration Dinner

Otherwise I'll be doing my best to relist things that sell but I'll be doing my own family stuff and shopping so please be patient and/or send me a note asking for a reserved listing if you don't see what you want.

And I wish you a super happy and delicious Thanksgiving!

Fitness Journal: Week 14

This week seems to be a testament to how bad I need to get cardio in. My average calories this week were 1791 a day. That's almost 200 calories more than I'm supposed to have A DAY and I still lost weight. The prime suspects were popcorn at the Potter opening and fried stuff at our family dinner. For Potter we had free large popcorn coupons. And I LOVE movie popcorn and my husband had his combos so he barely shared any of it so.... Then we had a big Thai feast at my mom's this weekend complete with delicious fried yummies that I just kept eating (they were so good, totally worth it). I kinda regret the popcorn (well the amount) but not enough to feel bad about it but I do see so clearly how important my cardio is and how much better I could be doing if I combined that with eating within my goal range.

Treasury Love: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

I'm here waiting for a HUGE blizzard to hit us. The news keeps on saying things like "if you must drive have an emergency survival kit in your car" and "the power company expects outages" and "if possible leave work early". Ummm yeah, I'm a little nervous, hopefully they're being overly dramatic but the coverage is way more intense than I've experienced.

That being said I welcome this cozy holiday treasury by feltedkitten. To see it up close and to get links to all of the goodies on the list click here to see it up close and to get links to all of the goodies on the list. I want that headband bad.

Recipe: Pretzel Rolls

So I had the musicmaker sign up to bring rolls to his office Thanksgiving lunch. I figured I'd make some or if I wasn't feeling like it he could go buy some. But I went a bit insane and made a ton of different rolls. Seriously i made 4 batches of different rolls in 3 hours one night. The night before I tested out some rolls and I guess I am just a bread addict because I couldn't get enough of the feeling of the dough between my fingers as I formed the dough ahhh one of the best feelings IN THE WORLD
Any ways I really loved how the pretzel rolls came out so I wanted to share the recipe. It may seem unconventional for Thanksgiving but if you want something interesting and different I really recommend adding these to your menu. I froze a ton of the rolls I made that night and I'm going to take a variety to Thanksgiving. The only thing is that I love the pretzel ones so much and zapping them on high for 30 seconds from frozen with a damp paper towel wrapped around them makes for a super delicious, easy and quick snack.

Pretzel Roll Recipe
What You Need
1 ½ cups warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 package)
2 teaspoons sugar
4 ½-5 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons kosher salt (I used table salt heinous I know)
4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup baking soda
large pot of water
1 egg, lightly beaten
pretzel salt (I used cracked sea salt)
  • Combine the water and the yeast in the bowl of mixer and let rest 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add sugar, flour, salt, butter and mix with the dough hook. It'll be silky but it shouldn't be sticky. Remember it's more about the right consistency with bread than a number amount of flour so add the flour bit by bit.
  • Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. (I was in a hurry and put the bowl in a sink with warm water going up the side for 30 minutes)
  • Cut the dough into 32 pieces on a floured surface. I cut it in half then each half in half then each half in 8.
  • Form into rolls by smoothing the dough around itself pinching on the bottom. You want a pulling pinching motion to get nice smooth tight balls
  • Let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes until doubled.
  • Preheat oven to 450°F
  •  In a large saucepan, bring 2 quarts of water to a low boil.
  • Add the baking soda and lower heat to a simmer.
  • Carefully slip the rolls into the poaching liquid, seam side down.
  • Poach for 1 minute f your balls float early you'll want to make sure to flip them part way through. (I didn't need to mine were submerged for a while then floated up and then I pulled them out after a while)
  • Place balls seam side down on sprayed cookie sheets.
  • Lightly beaten egg  and brush onto each roll
  • Sprinkle with salt
  • Snip the top with scissors
  • Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through baking
  • Cool completel
Makes 32 small rolls (of course this depends on the size you make them but I cut my dough into 36 pieces and I liked that size). Eat them fresh an hot or freeze for later. Reheat in a damp paper towel for 30 seconds in the microwave.
(adapted from stresscake who adapted it from Alton Brown recipe)

Garden: Homemade Grape Juice

A couple weeks ago an around the corner neighbor whom I hadn't met knocked on my door to ask if I wanted to learn how to make grape juice with all the grapes that she could see were growing on my fence. And how could I turn that down! I'm telling you I was instantly hooked. I had no idea how grape juice was made and my goodness fresh juice is amazingly delicious. If you've ever had that fresh pressed apple cider it was like that but grapes and no fake-o grape taste.

Since I don't have my own steam juicer I was absolutely thrilled when CSN stores asked if I wanted to do another review. CSN stores is a website that combines over 200 stores. They have all kinds of stuff from an amazing collection of cookware, toys for the kiddos, extra tall bar stools and would you believe it steam juicers -these are not the easiest to find. I have had great experiences with CSN stores and I highly recommend the website. They've got competitive prices, really great customer service (that I've tested out), and a really great selection. Anyways  I am so so excited to get the juicer.

Here are a few picks from my juicing lesson.
T was actually really helpful in sorting the grapes from the leaves and sticks.
L was not so helpful. In fact I had to remove her from that job since she kept on putting the undesirable bits in the bowl. But then again she is only two.
Here is my neighbor's juicer doing magic on my grapes. Seriously it's so cool. I'll describe the process when I get my own and when I post that review. Yeah I'm so excited.
I've never really been a fan of grape juice but seriously this stuff is it's own amazing thing. T drank tons, she loved it so so much. Oh boy I can't wait. And if you have a chance go wander around CSN stores.

Harry Potter Excitment and Two T-Shirt Tutorials

Oh my gosh I'm literally anxious with excitement. Last night I couldn't fall asleep it was like I was a kid the night before Christmas or the first day of school (but with out the bad anxious feelings). We went to a geek pub quiz and they had a Potter round that I rocked and it totally built up my already high level of excitement eeeeee!

Here are a few (nope not all) of my Potter wearables. The bottom two are shirts that I altered. It's my quickest way to alter t-shirts. It's good for shirts where there print is high up close to the neckline.

T-Shirt Altering Directions
1. Neckline: carefully cut off the collar. if you do it right the depth it'll be like the red dragon shirt. If you accidentally catch some extra fabric you may have to cut it deeper and it'll look more like the gryffindor shirt which I also really like but just be careful. If you want it more like the gryffindor shirt I'd cut the collar off try it on and then carefully trim extra.
*please note* since the neck is unfinished it will stretch so before you go cutting after the initial cut TRY IT ON because it looks like it didn't change much but the fit will be a lot different.
2. Sleeves: option 1- Next you want the sleeves to go up diagonally on your arm. The diagonal is way more flattering than cutting straight across like most tees naturally  cut. You can lay a girly shirt with good sleeves on top as a guide if you're nervous. (the edge will be unfinished and end up rolling a bit in a cute way like the gryffindor top -I also made a little snip in the top middle edge of the sleeves for a little detail)
2. Sleeves: option 2- If you are comfortable with a sewing machine better yet a a serger or know how to sew on knits this is another option. I cut off the sleeve along the seam that is attached then I cut off the diagonal of the sleeve and sew it back on (right sides together, sew around and then you flip the sleeve out and it should work). This will be like the red dragon shirt leaving the finished sleeve end.

Freezer Paper Stenciling
1. Pick your design and cut it out of freezer paper (this is like wax paper but the wax is only on one size). You want the shinny side down so consider that while positioning. I used my cricut and put the shinny side on my mat when I cut things but you can use a silhouette or even an exacto knife and put a print out under the freezer paper to trace.
2. Iron the stencil on your shirt (or bag or whatever). Shinny side down. Be anal about this make sure you do a good job getting all the edges. This is the step that I worry about most.
3. With a board or paper in between your shirt layers Use fabric paint (I got mine at joanns and michaels) and a foam brush and apply the paint. I blot and smoosh as opposed to brush.  Don't go too heave at once just keep on blotting and adding a little paint at a time.
4. Next you pull off the stencil. I like to wait about an hour. It will still be wet so be careful not to touch the paint and not to touch the wet stencil to spots on the shirt.
*my sister's and friend linda's shirts bled a bit and both of theirs had a lot of paint on the board in between the layers so I think they maybe did theirs too heavy/didn't iron enough. But really I'm not positive why it happened so I'd practice on an old shirt or junk fabric to get the hang of things.

Here is a link from Panjo that I found really helpful.
And if you click on any of my photos it'll open them bigger so you can see better.

Let me know if you try any of these out!

New Music: The Lazy Waves

I've been waiting for this day for a long time. It's finally the release day for The Lazy Waves first album. Woohoo. You can listen to the whole thing online and even download it for free -they say donations are super appreciated. This is a new band with kinda a cool, folksy, smooth sound but over beats. It reminds me of some of the music I fell in love with while traipsing around Europe during my short study abroad term at Oxford. If you need some song recommendations my favorites are "Get Me Through This" and "Freeway to Nowhere" which have more of a soulful beat (I'm a sucker for soul) and "The Game of Life" which reminds me of Robbie Williams in a good way.

Go have a listen and if you like it spread the word and tell someone else about the band. They've got a facebook page too if you're into that.
And since I'm not the best at describing music I wanted to include this little write up by Mark Dago.
Creative distractions tempt the muse and The Lazy Waves are no exception to that thought. The Waves are a ‘Happy’ three piece group without all that unimaginative cheer. ‘Happy’ in a soothing sort of way. Think ‘Tears For Fears’ over break beats. Their debut project of the same name is a hook filled chain reaction of sonic indie-airness. The lulling vocal talent of Michael Gross come together perfectly with the joyous melodies and assimilates into the sample-collaging of Daniel Fischer’s colorfully dense production. Perfectly calculated textures of keyboard emphasis are sprinkled in throughout the long play by Matt Glass. Don’t bother pressing the ‘Not Interesting’ button , the ten tracks of melodic strut and breezy pop eclecticism is not only easy on the ears but a welcome breath of fresh air in this post modern ruse of generic musical soundscapes. From the finely tuned, pitch perfect cuts like ‘It Ain’t Over (‘Til You’re Gone) & ‘Believe And Achieve’ to the persistent optimism of the horn section and the sharp samples on ‘Freeway To Nowhere’ The Waves showcase the work of extremely commanding and intentional songwriters that flex their talents into new directions. A dynamic game changer of what The Lazy Waves hopefully aim to accomplish over and over and over again.

Naughty Time: Beady Necklaces

These girls never cease to amaze me. They are already craft-a-holics although they they call it "making craps". They were obsessed with making necklaces after my friend Linda made one on Harry Potter craft day. So, the next time the nieces were over and needed some occupying I set them up with the bead box and gigantic needles.
Now I wasn't sure if this activity was going to be a keep them busy sort of thing or keep me totally involved thing.
Actually I was fully expecting L to need lots of help but I always try and make them do things themselves first. After some hand over hand direction both picked it up and loved it quite quickly. And I know I'm really lax with the girls using pins and needles but really these giant ones aren't very sharp at all and they were really good about not doing anything scary with them. I definitely recommend this to any one with kiddos to occupy maybe over the holidays.

What's For Dinner: Week 60

(cowboy burger and grilled zuccs)
For those of you are new  to my blog I write these weekly plans to help me spend less (I kinda of love grocery shopping, yea I know I'm weird), to save time and to try and help us eat in more often. Also I love knowing what other people eat so I thought it would be fun to share. For a while I'll be adding my plans for what greens. I'll be eating since one of my resolutions is to build a habit of introducing more green veggies into our diet. Maybe some day it'll be so normal for us that I won't have to mention them any more.

We ate out a lot last week so there are a few repeats.

Day Main Meal Goals (Veggies, Whole Grain, Fish)
Sunday Carnitas Tacos Grains and nuts: Sandwich, granola bars, ww pasta
Veggies: zuccs, peas
Fish: Shrimp
Monday Beef Stroganoff and peas
Tuesday Teriyaki Steak and Mashed Potatoes
Wednesday Shrimp Pasta Carbonara
Thursday Sausage and Acorn Squash
Friday Harry Potter Party Beef Barley and Leek Soup
Saturday Cowboy Hamburgers and grilled zucchini

UPDATED: Lindsey asked for my cowboy burger recipe. It's not so much of a recipe but this is what I do for the cowboy burger: I just use a frozen patty cooked up, smear BBQ sauce on the top and bottom bun, then refried beans that I mix in a little taco seasoning on the bottom bun, the burger, cheese and fried onion strings (which I soak the thinly sliced onion in buttermilk for 15+ minutes, then I bread it in a combo of pancake mix (like bisquick), flour. paprika, and garlic salt) and the fry it up.) Hope you like it.

Fitness Journal: Week 12

I'm kinda cranky and not happy with this past week. I got weighed and pinched and I was pretty much the same as last time (maybe half a pound up) which was may be 6-8 weeks ago I think. I really need to get my cardio in and get better on my eating.

Of course I was hungry last night when we got to Pub Quiz (geeky pop quiz thing). The musicmaker and I usually split food but none of the appetizers sounded good and I was hungry so I decided to get my own portion of chicken strips and fries, huge mistake. It was way too much food and too much grease blah so I'm up today probably from that. Also I've been feeling kinda sick not totally sick just that feeling like you're going to get sick so I've been drinking a lot of juice. Boo. But in general I'm just been feeling hungrier and unsatisfied this past week. Whine whine whine I know.

I did do better about getting cardio in this week so far except when I was too sick to swim. And I know I really have to get back to logging my food. I maintain fine so as long as I get my cardio in I should be able to shed some weight even with the crappy eating here and there.

Weight:

 11/4/2010 148.2
11/11/2010 149.2
I'm 5'5 but have a small frame
(I think I'm going for 135 and we'll see from there)

RaeGun Finds: Kitchen Aid Pasta Attachment Review

I LOVE IT. I have been lusting after one of these babies the second after I purchased the ice cream maker attachment over 2 years ago. Now I really wish I had bought the pasta maker first. As much as I like the ice cream maker I will and have already used the pasta maker much more.
(we made sausage and ricotta ravioli with pumpkin cream sauce - click to enlarge)
The only down side is that it is freaking expensive. I saved up for a long time and right when I had decided to use my swagbucks that I earned searching the internet to buffer the cost CSN stores invited me to do a review SCORE! So while I was fully prepared to pay full price for it I was lucky enough to get it for almost 50% off. And even with that I think it is worth the full cost.

(I served some Asian style with a veggie broth, tofu, cabbage and bok choy)
Some reviews said you needed two people, to that I say blah. It makes it easier with two people and your first time you may want two people but it really is easy enough and fast enough for me to do by myself.
(Linguine with Clam and Bacon Sauce and Fettuccine with Wine Beef Gravy)
The pasta tastes delicious. I've made regular white flour pasta, light wheat, and vegan white. Seriously I will be making at least one batch a week. I really couldn't recommend it any more. It's easy to clean, easy to use, and yummy. For a while my mom kept saying she had a crank one at home (in Thailand) that she could bring back on her next trip and that Ross had them for 10$ but the second she saw this baby work she was immediately converted.
(we also made spinach and cheese manicotti)
Let me know if you have specific questions I wanted this for so long I figured some of you may have been curious about it as well. I bought the KPRA set: sheet, spaghetti/linguine, and fettuccine cutters. So there you go my rav reviews and pasta show off :)
