What's for Dinner: Week 36

(carbonara with homemade noodles)
For those of you are new  to my blog I write these weekly plans to help me spend less (I kinda of love grocery shopping, yea I know I'm weird), to save time and to try and help us eat in more often. Also I love knowing what other people eat so I thought it would be fun to share. For a while I'll be adding my plans for what greens I'll be eating since one of my resolutions is to build a habit of introducing more green veggies into our diet. Maybe some day it'll be so normal for us that I won't have to mention them any more.

So I didn't eat the salad. But it was mostly because my lettuce was bad and I didn't feel like going to costco and my mom kept making dinner. But this weeks goal is to get more veggies down but isn't that my goal every week.

I did make my first homemade pasta though and the music maker said it would be better if it was thinner hahaha and I said, see that's why we need the kitchen aid pasta attachment. I love it when my traps work. I'm saving up my swagbucks amazon gift cards for the attachment but I'll probably break down and just pay for the rest. I've got about 35$ right now so we'll see how long I can hold out.

Day Main Meal Goals (Veggies, Whole Grain, Fish)
Sunday Carbonara with homemade noodles
Grains and nuts: almonds,
WW pasta
Veggies: salad, peas, corn
Fish: Talapia
Monday Ribs at the naughties'
Tuesday Big Salad
Wednesday Swedish Meatballs  w/almond peas
Thursday Camp Dinner w/hubby work peeps
Friday Eat Out
Saturday Fish Tacos

Cruise Review: Golden Princess Repositioning to Vancouver from Younger People Part III

This is part III of a 3 part review of our Princess Cruise. If you haven't read the first part (over all feel and food) you can find that post here and here. I'm writing these reviews since I didn't see anything indicating the age of the reviewers when I was researching the cruises and I think others in our age range 30's may find this useful.

Sorry this is a long post for all my normal readers, don't fear this is the last one I'll have a giveaway up tomorrow.

If you do don't have time to read all of these post my quick summary is that this cruise was a waste of our money, time and the energy we both spent trying to get a work done so we wouldn't come home to chaos. The reasons in short, the food was poor, the entertainment was cheesey or stupid although we enjoyed a few of the options, and most of the people on the boat no kidding were over 70 years old and it was catered to them.

The Ports/Stops

We liked the ports a lot it was fun. We didn't pay for any excursions or pay for any big event at any of the stops. The scheduled stops were Catalina, San Fransisco, Victoria, and Vancouver. The boat did not stop in Catalina because of the whether, but I'm not aware that we were refunded any port fees. But we've been there before and liked it.

San Fran we just wandered around the city with a friend who met us. We'd both been to San Fran before and liked it but thought spending time with our friend and looking for records (the music maker's favorite past time) was a good way to fill our time after a quick jaunt through the pier and visit to the sea lions, I love those guys.

Victoria was as beautiful as everyone said. By this point we didn't feel like spending any more money as we were feeling riped off. The Bushart gardens were highly recommended but I wasn't sure that Daniel would like them and it was over 40$ a person to get in. So we just walked all over which was super easy and fun to do. We went into of course all two of their record shops and had a snack of poutine a Canadian treat, fries with gravy and cheese curds it was fantastic. It's just a fun city to wander in. We almost paid for the hop on hop off bus (30$) but seriously I'm glad we didn't because it was so easy to get around. Many on another trip I'd do that since they explain a lot (I hear) but for the first time we were happy just to wander.

It dropped us off in Vancouver. I thought it was nice, a little dirtier than I expected but I think I'm just spoiled by how clean of a city Salt Lake is. We enjoyed it, but we spent it digging for records and I found a book at one of the thrift stores early in the day and read it while we went from store to store. I know this isn't what most travelers would do but this is pretty much every one of our vacations haha. I love it and the music maker has the opportunity to find new and unusual goodies to put into his music. We ate at Sun Sui Wah which many of you suggested and enjoyed it. Super reasonably priced. Oh I forgot to mention that we rented a car. Because flying from Vancouver was so much compared to flying from Seattle and I wasn't sure what to do with our luggage and figured we'd need a car for Vancouver any ways we rented a car one way to drop off in Seattle. But I did notice that there were people checking in luggage at the port in Vancouver. Oh an we got poutine at Costco, I asked a gal with an adorable shop, where to go and she said Costco had good poutine and she was right.

We drove down to Anacortes to stay the night with friends and see their new baby and they took us to a fantastic restaurant. Besides the absolutely wonderful company of old friends the food and atmosphere was lovely I think it was called Drift or something like that. Such a beautiful city.

Finally we did one more day of record digging in Seattle. In the few minutes that I drove that day I ended up going the wrong way down a one way street and when I got re situated I noted that there were no signs on the street or on the turn to the street that indicated it was one way so that bugged me but I'm notoriously bad at directions another reason I love SLC (it's all on the grid system streets are numbered and make sense). We liked Seattle, I got my Trader Joes fix but we didn't have time to eat anything there (we just ate at the airport on our way out).

Final Random Info
We paid about 400$ a person and found out that a lot of the people on the boat only paid 200$ a person so that was frustrating. I'm not sure how to avoid that but it seems like many of them bought their tickets later than us.

I thought the room was really nice, much much bigger than our room on our Royal Caribbean trip.

The staff did not seem happy to be working there. They all seemed kind of burnt out. I think I caught a couple eye rolls or looks that pretty much said the same thing.

We did the any time dinning and really liked it. Instead of choosing one seating time you could go in and sit with other people or sit with your own group. This was really nice. As a side note at some point we thought hey maybe we'll gain some old people wisdom but most the folks we sat with were just eh one of the guys talked about how he'd blow lotto money on lap dances. I thought it was interesting meeting new people none-the-less.

Now I know other people who have enjoyed this cruise so maybe it's just us but I figure there's probably more people like us that would appreciate this info.

Dramamine will knock you out. If you feel a little sea sick Bonnine is a way better option.

I will not go on another Princess cruise (well maybe if I was paid or if it was free). At first I thought it may be just our destinations weren't the most alluring to younger crowds but after talking to some of the 40 somethings on the boat it seems Princess has the reputation of being for old people and that even the Hawaiian cruises are totally geared towards old people. I'm super disappointed in our travel agent from Columbus Travel for directing us to this cruise especially since we specifically talked about the age appropriateness.

That's all hopefully this didn't come across as bitter, because I'm not I just thought the info may be helpful to others. We made the best of the the trip and I still got to relax my brain and have fun and eat some yummy food just not as much as I was expecting.

Cruise Review: Golden Princess Repositioning to Vancouver from Younger People Part II

(yes that is us laughing in the background, we sadly didn't catch the best dancer like the batwing action, the hyper hopper and the pointer, they were awesome)

This is part II of a 3 part review of our Princess Cruise. If you haven't read the first part (over all feel and food) you can find that post here. I'm writing these reviews since I didn't see anything indicating the age of the reviewers when I was researching the cruises and I think others in our age range 30's may find this useful.

The Entertainment
First off I was considering going with Holland American since their Vancouver cruise was much cheaper but our travel agent told me that was for old people and I wouldn't like it and that Princess was more age appropriate. I kid you not for the first 3 days we only saw one younger couple. There were many over 70 couples. A few families with kids, about 40 year old parents and grandparents. A number of 40-50 year old women with their mothers. So we were totally out of place and the entertainment was definitely catered to the older crowd.

The shows were really cheesy. If you watch Glee it was as uncomfortable to watch as when Shuster sings rap songs and at least for one of the shows the costumes were hideous and really unflattering I actually felt sorry for the singers/dancers. I have to admit we laughed a lot. We went to two of these shows because there wasn't much else to do. The second show was better but still pretty cheesy. Come on a black guy with dreads bicycling across the stage (poorly) and singing "Rain Drops Keep Falling on my Head" it was awkward.

They also had multiple times when the crew would ask questions to passengers about the boat. They had this and various versions of this almost every night. We peeked in on one of them and I just don't know how they can consider that entertainment.

There were many pools and hot tubs. The hot tube we tried was nice and toasty. I did find it weird that it seemed like one pool and/or hot tube was always closed or drained and it was usually a different one.

What we did enjoy was the regular comedian they had (they had a juggling comedian who was not funny and kind of annoying, I kept on fighting falling asleep) and this awesome piano player who sang Frank Sinatra and that era songs it was absolutely lovely. I wish there was more of that kind of thing. We also ended up watching two movies that they showed in their theater Star Trek (which we had seen) and Avatar (which we hadn't seen) that pasted the time well. But to me you can watch a movie whenever, I don't want to do that on vacation, but there weren't any other appealing options so I'm glad there was at least that.

Naughty Time and Recipe: Ice Cream Making, Coconut Lime

It was nice and warm. The music maker had just mowed the naughties my mom, sister and I were lounging in the yard and it just seemed that we needed to make some ice cream. Lanna lost interest after a while but Tira had fun regularly checking the ice cream and watching it grow as it froze.

I've posted this recipe a couple years ago but I figure most of you haven't been around that long so here it is. It's rediculously simple and while it sounded delicious to me both my sister and mom thought the combo sounded weird but but loved it once they had a wee taste. It's super refreshing.

Lime Coconut Ice Cream
1 (15 ounce) can cream of coconut (this is NOT the same as coconut milk, I found it in the 'Mexican' section of the grocery store)
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
3/4 cup water

The Steps
  • Mix together the cream of coconut, lime juice, and water in a bowl.
  • Refrigerate if you're not ready to process it.
  • Process in your ice cream maker.
If you don't have an ice cream maker and have been considering one I love my kitchen aid attachment.

Please Pray For BKK and all of Thailand

We visited Thailand every other year pretty much since I was born to visit family. We moved to Bangkok when i was in Junior High. I finished High School there and now the news is splashed with footage of the places I fondly remember, places I probably would be if I were in town. They are on fire and being destroyed by terrorists. People are dying. The international media is calling these people protesters but as my sister put it, just in the same way that an anti-abortionist blowing up a planned parenthood is a terrorist these guys are terrorists but to me way way worse.

Growing up there have always been coups where government changes but according to my dad it has never been this bad, this uncontrolled violence . The way this is reported makes me almost as sick as the pure violence and devastation of it all. Thailand had been a democracy for a long time (not a perfect one, but show me one true democratic country), they have their problems for sure but there is a lot of messed up information being spread. Here is an interesting article if you're interested (you can scroll to the -- points if you don't have time it gives a clear explanation of things).

If you are a praying person please pray that this will end soon with as little more loss and death as possible.

Cruise Review: Golden Princess Repositioning to Vancouver from Younger People Part I

(one of the many pools)
First off let me say that I'm 29 and my husband is 34 we're not crazy partiers but we don't like to be bored either we're not lounge by the pool types and we like good food. So this is a review hopefully to help people who are like us make a better choice than we did. I'm going to post this in parts since it would be an insanely long post. Sorry to my regular readers who totally don't care but when I was researching cruises I wish that I had come across a review from someone like me. I promise you a giveaway and tutorial next week and maybe even a recipe before. But I want to put my thoughts out there in case it can help some folks and totally understand that this is just our one experience.

If you do don't have time to read all of these posts, my quick summary is that this cruise was a waste of our money, time and the energy we both spent trying to get a work done so we wouldn't come home to chaos. The reasons in short, the food was poor, the entertainment was cheesy or stupid although we enjoyed a few of the options, and most of the people on the boat no kidding were over 70 years old and it was catered to them.

I'll go into more detail by category

The Food
We decided a good way to describe it was that it was like Denny's sometimes it's good but most of the time it tastes mass produced and just okay and really the reason you go to Denny's is because it's 2am and nothing else is open. This was for both the dinning room (i.e. fancy sit down meals) and the buffet. The little cafe served soup that was fine and pastries and some sandwiches. I did enjoy most of the desserts I tried and their sandwiches were nice but if I had had them in a  regular restaurant or coffee shop they wouldn't draw me back in.

We went on a Royal Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon and that food we loved every bite. Everything tasted special. It was like going to a restaurant that was featured on a fancy food show every night. On this cruise I wasn't tempted to over eat. The food was only bad a few times but we were really expecting it to be better than just okay. It seemed like even the people we dined with thought it was just okay too.
(I know I look gross but this was the only cruise food picture we took)
I did like their fettuccine alfredo but still I'm not sure if I'd call it special. Again I enjoyed most of the desserts but not to the point that I finished them and wanted more. I liked ordering their cheese platter which was different every night and let us sample a variety of fancy cheeses. And we both LOVED the soft serve ice cream there was definitely something special. The chocolate tasted like they used really good quality chocolate and hubby liked the vanilla, I didn't try it but he said it was delish.

Two more parts to come.

Treasury Love: Summer Soul

ETSY has these things called treasuries which are collections curated by anyone. I"ve had a few nice people tell me they've featured me in a treasury lately (always something I appreciate). Here's one above that's still going. Click here to get a better look with clickable links so you can visit each of the shops featured. I am in love with that felt flower hair clip.

Here are a few of the other treasuries that people have let me know I'm included on (and that are still live)

What's for Dinner: Week 34

(Poutine)
For those of you are new  to my blog I write these weekly plans to help me spend less (I kinda of love grocery shopping, yea I know I'm weird), to save time and to try and help us eat in more often. Also I love knowing what other people eat so I thought it would be fun to share. For a while I'll be adding my plans for what greens I'll be eating since one of my resolutions is to build a habit of introducing more green veggies into our diet. Maybe some day it'll be so normal for us that I won't have to mention them any more.

We're fresh back from the vacation which I'll post about tomorrow but now we'll stick to food. This poutine above bought at the mall food court in Victoria was some of the best food we had during the cruise portion of the trip. Let's just say that the food on our not cheap Princess Cruise was terrible. So not inedible but probably not as good as Sizzler's and about the same level as Denny's (you know some times it taste yummy but it's still Denny's and most isn't so hot). It was super disappointing actually. It just totally tasted massed produced. It was no comparison to the food I make at home and the cheapest meals we eat out normally and I'm talking both the dinning room food and the buffet. And it by no means was near the food we had on our super cheapo Royal Caribbean cruise we took for our honeymoon. I'll do an official cruise review later this week but lets just say as far as food goes I'm thrilled to be home.

Day Main Meal Goals (Veggies, Whole Grain, Fish)
Sunday Gouda Apple Chicken Sausage and Roasted Rosemary Potatoes
Grains and nuts:WW bread, almonds
Veggies: salad, peas, salad
Fish: Shrimp
Monday Oven Fried Chicken w/ Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Almond Peas
Tuesday Pasticio
Wednesday Taco Salad
Thursday Wine Basil Sausage Pasta
Friday Something with shrimp any ideas?
Saturday Homemade Pizza

Show and Tell: A New Headband

I decided to make a new thing for me every month so far I've done this little headband. I have a tutorial for one similar here. I was going to post a tutorial before I left but didn't have time (I'll do it when I get back, I promise, no really I will). But I did want to show it off because I liked it. I wore it to James Browns' birthday party last week.

A Review: The Rody and CSN Stores

I was asked to do a review a while ago and chose the Rody, kinda a funky, next generation rocking horse from CSN Stores which is a collection of over 200 stores with various products from kids bedding, to cookware, to awesome kid's furniture and toys, to amazing modern furnishings and more. The service was great and fast. Seriously I don't think I've ordered anything online and received it that fast.

But since the naughty girls have been in Thailand for the last six week I had to wait to review it. But seriously the second started I blowing it up Lanna was saying horsey horsey (which by the way requires you to pump air into it's bottom which was extra funny in Lanna's excitement she'd jostle the horse and the pump would come out and air out and yeah).

But they've really enjoyed it, without prompting bouncing and saying boing boing boing. I think it's adorable in a wonderfully retro way. For a big kid toy in the house I love it, it's almost art to me since the design is so much better than most kiddo toys so I don't banish it to the boy bin or play room like most of the other toys.

Naughty Time: Home Safe and Sound

Princess Snow White (who also appears as Princess Tiana) and Princess Cinderella made it safely back from Thailand with my parents despite the nasty Red Shirt craziness that is going on over there right now. My mom was mad because of all the violent protesting and bombing and crap that was going on she couldn't get all her shopping done.
But I'm just happy they are back (even though I'm actually on the cruise right now). I'm sad that I forgot my camera because at the airport as soon as Tira saw my sister she ran at her screaming "Mommy Mommy" and she was smiling so so big, it was wonderful!

Show and Tell: The Luckiest

Today is our four year anniversary. The other day I decided out of hate for the treadmill that I'd go running outside despite the fact that it was raining and I'm so glad that I did. Not only was it a great run (running in light sprinkles is awesome!), but Ben Fold's "The Luckiest" popped on my shuffle. It's there because I have our mix that we played at the reception on my playlist and being so close to our anniversary I kind of teared up. I really am the luckiest.

SLC (and beyond) Locals: Patiri Photography UPDATED

I've been meaning to post about this special going on for those who are in the Salt Lake and surrounding areas. My sister in law does really neat photography. Her specialty is shooting musicians and she's got her own raw style that really works for that.
Luckily for those of us who aren't into the same old same old family pictures she also does senior pictures and family portraits. Right now she's having a sale (it's a really good deal on top of her already super reasonable prices). So if you are even slightly interested give her a call or send her an email so you can cash in on this special.

Can You Help: Vacationers, Seattle and Vancouver Locals

Only one week until we leave on the cruise. I've almost got all the orders that I need to ship before we set sale done, but I'm nervous I'm going to forget something on the vacation side of things. So I'm asking you guys if you have any reminders of things I may want to take on a cruise and then a drive from Vancouver to Seattle. The cruise leaves from LA goes up the cost stops in Catalina, San Fran, Victoria and Vancouver. If any of you have been on this cruise or gone to these places let me know if there's anything I shouldn't miss.

As is normal with our vacations, we'll be hitting all the thrift stores and record stores looking for vintage patterns and obscure LP's for the music maker as we drive (if you know of any send them my way). We'll have more flexibility in Vancouver and Seattle too so I was wondering if any of you guys know any good local dives, like not too pricey eateries in Vancouver or Seattle?

Giveaway: Skirted Ruffle Diaper Cover (closed)

Custom orders often are the best way to come up with new designs. It's so fun using someone else's brain and desires to come up with new creations. This little diaper cover has ruffles that go all the way around. My normal ruffle diaper covers just have the ruffle on the bum so while they are cute for crawlers and runners alike, for cake smashing pictures like my customer was wanting to use these for, all the cutest is hidden. So this is my attempt to bring some of the cuteness to the top. (The picture is of the back but the front looks just the same but with no label.) For this giveaway I'm letting the winner chose the size. 0-3m, 3-6m, 6-12m, 12-24m, 2T or 3T.

I've decided after the success of selling the Lovely Showers Ruffle Diaper Cover gift set in my shop that I want to do more sets so I'm going to use you guys to help me think of things to put on the tops. When you leave your comment to enter please give me an idea of what I can put on a onesie to go with some ruffly diaper covers be creative, don't worry about being to weird or too obvious. Some that I've thought off are applique monograms and numbers. What animals do you guys like, shapes, objects, etc? Something that you think people buying for little ones would want and something where the outline is the main shape. Also I'll add these bottoms to my shop in the next store update (probably end of May or beginning of June) but if you want it before then just send me a note.

p.s. I'm not sold on the name of the new style so if you have ideas for that too that would be great (something that may come up in the search engines).

To Enter:

Then comment here telling me your best ideas for appliques or embellishments to go on ones are (see above if you don't know what I mean). The lovely shower set to the right is an example of one idea.
